What does the qualification replace?

The qualification replaces the existing technical certificate, the C&G2330 and the NVQ Level 3, the C&G 2356.

Who is the qualification aimed at?

Anyone wishing to work towards being qualified as an electrician and registered with the JIB. Under current government apprenticeship schemes, the course is funded to those aged between 16 and 18 when they start the apprenticeship. The course is also available to mature apprentices but will not be fully funded.

When does the electrical 2330 Level 2 end?

The last registration on the course as part of the apprentice framework is scheduled for May 2011. The qualification will cease to exist in its current form and becomes a "non-framework" related qualification from April 2011 (i.e. not part of the electrical apprenticeship). There will be no government funding for the qualification for adults from July 2011 although this may be subject to change. Funding for students taking full time courses looks set to continue.

When does the electrical 2330 Level 3 end?

Can I still join the JIB as an electrician on the new qualification?

As the scheme is being devised by the Summit Skills, it is fully expected that completion of the course will enable full JIB registration at Electrician level.

Who is responsible for the change?

The introduction of the QCF has resulted in the changes becoming necessary. The electrotechnical scheme has been devised by the Summit Skills who in turn have consulted and worked within the electrical industry about the changes. The new qualification has been designed by the employers within the industry, Summit Skills contacted all the employers about the changes and built a qualification based on the responses.

What pathways can be studied?

Many of the pathways (such as street lighting etc.) available through the old scheme have been scrapped following limited take up. The new scheme is currently available to installation electricians and maintenance electricians. No other scheme, apart from a rumoured domestic qualification, has been planned.

How will it be assessed?

The knowledge units will be assessed via 9 internally marked assignments, a short answer question paper and 3 separate GOLA exams. The performance units will be assessed by a combination of a site diary and site visits by an assessor, much like the NVQ Level 3 before it.

Can this electrical qualification be done in a college environment?

The knowledge units will be completed in a college environment however the performance units can only be completed within the workplace. It is not possible to gain the full qualification unless you are working within the electrical field or have access to significant work experience.

Can I move my existing electrical qualifications across?

The 2330 levels 2 and 3 can be mapped via the scheme document however the 2357 contains an additional unit, 302, which is not found in any of the current or older schemes. This means anyone moving across to the new qualification will have to complete this unit to achieve the full award. At this moment, the NVQ units do not appear anywhere within the scheme documents, leading us to think that they cannot be mapped across at this moment in time.

Will my current full qualification continue to be recognised?

Yes, as long as you have completed that qualification. If you have the 2330 and you do not have the NVQ level 3, you need to enrol and complete before 2013 to get JIB status as an electrician.

What are the entry requirements?

If you are an apprentice, then good GCSE grades A-C in at least 4 subjects including English and Maths are essential. If you are a mature candidate, then entry will take into account previous experience. Some of the level 3 Maths on the course can be quite in depth, it is wise to prepare and foolish to set yourself up for a fail.

What is the QCF?

The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) is a new framework which has been designed to make vocational qualifications easier to follow and simpler in their application to qualifications. Under "Rules of Combination", a series of individual units are combined to create a qualification. The amount of units studied determines the level of the qualification.

I am halfway through the 2330, what will happen?

If you have started or completed the 2330 Level 2, then you should move onto the 2330 Level 3 wherever possible or move to the new qualification when Summit Skills have clarified the mapping route.

How long is the qualification?

The qualification has a total GLH (guided learning hours) of 646, which include the knowledge units and the performance units.

How do I complete the performance units?

These can only be completed on site under real working conditions. It is expected that you are employed and working with electrical installations when completing the full C&G2357. The work you complete will be assessed by a qualified person and you will be visited on site to confirm that you are competent. You will be assessed on a variety of different aspects (see performance units) and you will be expected to complete a logbook.

What do I need for the apprentice framework?

  • City and Guilds 2357
  • Maths Functional Skills Level 2
  • English Functional Skills Level 2
  • ICT Functional Skills Level 2
  • Employers Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
